Let's rally for Welsh independence this summer – Daily Wales
I love the notion of independence - however, since Plaid members and supporters come from, well lets say a well-defined middle-class that is wholly dependent on public sector employment (and/or third sector employment based on public sector subsidy), the first thing an independent state does is contract the public sector. Jobbins' examples above of recent states that have become independent - a massive public sector contraction was necessary. This causes problems for the Welsh nationalist coterie as it means giving up on those nice public sector (Westminster funded) gold plated pensions or having a Mel Gibson moment and having 'freeeeeedooooomm'.
List of recently created states:
Czech Republic
Slovakia
Eritrea
Namibia
Latvia
Georgia
And the list could go on....
The above sample experienced a 33-71% contraction in the size of their respective public sectors. It would be naive to argue otherwise, in the presence of such data. Even the Yes Campaign in Scotland have argued that there could be a small reduction in the number of public sector roles in an independent Scotland. This is why not that many nationalists in Wales really want independence - its easy to hate and snipe from the background, with a nice government pension waiting in the wings, than to actually take the next step and achieve independence.
